Professional Photographers of SW Ohio Annual Picnic

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Each month I get together for dinner and more training in the art of portrait photography. This month is when we have a picnic instead of the regular meeting with a speaker/seminar leader. The location for the picnic was at Charles and Carolyn Woods home in Franklin. Their back yard provided much inspiration for me as I consider the development of my country barn studio for indoor and outdoor portraits. You will see a wagon, a swing, and several other photo areas that were inviting us to be creative.

Photographers were invited to bring their families before the food was brought out to have portraits made. As photographers we do spend much of our time behind the camera and this was an opportunity for us to have portraits made. It was a great time sharing various ideas and lighting techniques and making portraits for each other.

I am delighted to be involved with a great group of professionals who seek to know each other and share their knowledge freely. If you are a photographer in the SW Ohio I would encourage you to join this group and start to attend the monthly dinner/seminars. We meet monthly at Bullwinkle’s Restaurant at the Middletown exit off I-75.

PPSO Professional Photographers of SW Ohio is an affiliate of PPO Professional Photographers of Ohio of which I am also a member.

An adorable little helper

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

At Sarah Wheelers senior portrait session her little sister helped out by standing behind me, rattling things, swishing leaves, and just jumping about to get the attention of the horse. In equine photography we call this “ear up”. If you take a portrait with a horse and the ears are not up many times the horse appears rather like a mule. Or the horse seems annoyed or bored and this is not what we want when capturing that special connection between a horse and his human.

So Sarah’s little sis helped out and I just thought she was so cute I had to take some portraits of her too. Also the galleries for this portrait session are up: Sarah’s Senior Portrait Session Gallery

Professional Photographers of Ohio 56th Annual Convention

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I had a great time at the PPO Annual Convention this weekend. It was great learning from great photographers like Hanson Fong, Rick & Deborah Lynn Ferro, Jim and Katarina Garner, Will Crockett of Smart Shooter.com., and Kenneth Kneringer. On Monday I will be attending the seminar by Curt Littlecott. I was also able to meet some local folks that I hope to follow up with and get to know better. Everyone was open and friendly and willing to share what works best for them. Some of us were able to sit down over lunch and discuss the various classes and what we were learning from each. I am so pleased to be a part of the Professional Photographers of Ohio organization because of all that I was able to learn and because of all the great folks I was able to meet at this convention.

Here is a list of the web sites of some of the keynote speakers:

Here are some folks that I was able to chat with: The owners of Bella Baby Photography, Mendy of Portraits by Mendy in Centerville, Christina of Photography by Christina, the owners of Kats Eye Photography in Medway, one of the photographers of Lasko Photography located in Beavercreek, and many others.

With regard to my photography I was able to sell some of my older equipment to the Columbus Camera Group, Inc. With the money I purchased a large 5 way reflector for portraits, a fold away digital gray card for color calibration and white balance, along with a new portrait lens for my Canon 1D Mark IIn digital camera (EF 85mm f 1.8 prime lens).

It’s about time for spring to get here. I am so tired of gray and dreary weather here in Dayton. As soon as the foliage comes out and the grass greens up, you can count on me being out there taking pictures almost every day.

Bonds of Love: Child Portraits to Cherish

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Children are so fun to shoot and capturing those precious moments when you can see a natural emotional interaction can be fleeting. Not only that, but children grow up so darn fast. For a shoot like this I shoot lots of images.  When I do a shoot with a child or children, I want to capture natural interactions. Many times it takes a little while to get past those “smile and say cheese” unnatural looks. That’s when I find the most precious images.

I asked Heather to meet me at the beach with her daughter and bring some fun things to do. Just let me do my thing while you two enjoy some moments together. It was windy, but it was clearly a special time. These were Heather’s first portraits of her daughter since she was an adopted child. Their bond was growing each day and this was another opportunity for them to express their growing bonds of love. It was a great privilege that I was invited and able to capture such special moments.

Peter took some photos of my newly adoptive daughter and myself at the beach. Being a single mom, we had no photos of us together. These photos capture our newly formed bond. We had fun having the photos taken and I think it is reflected in the work. Peter did a great job and was a joy to work with. I will cherish these photos forever. Heather Wolff —Cincinnati
