Salomonie Sizzler Endurance Ride

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Patty and I spent the weekend in NE Indiana at the Salomonie Sizzler Endurnace Ride. Although the trails were very slick from all night rain on Friday night and clay soil in this part of the state, Patty had a great time on Coco who carried her to two 2nd places in the limited distance events. Limited distance is 25 miles. There were many pulls because of the slippery conditions.

Doug Palme was the official photographer for the event, but had a difficult time on Saturday due to the continued extreme overcast conditions and several down pours. On Friday, once Patty had vetted in for the event, I walked around the camp doing some portraits. I was able to take a few other pictures. I spend a little bit of time with Doug shooting some of the riders on trail on Sunday morning, but this time the conditions were not good because of the extremely clear skies which made it difficult to find even lighting areas.

Here are a couple of images from the weakend:

Lori @ Dancing Horse Farm

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I had  a great time making portraits for Lori Aman with her lovely horse Breezy at Dancing Horse Farm. We ended up having the session on Sunday afternoon around 4:30pm because we got rained out the night before.

On Saturday, Lori was concerned about how overcast the day was. But actually, I want everyone to know that the soft even light of an overcast day is ideal for portraits. When the sun is bright and intense it many times forms harsh bright spots in an image and at the same time deep dark shadows. On a bright day, we would have to find what I call open shade to take the portraits. In open shade, the light is less intense and more even. It helps the skin to look smooth and there are no dark shadows in the eyes. So, I’m saying this for those who read this blog to help everyone to understand that an overcast day, is like free open shade. You don’t have to look for open shade. It’s everywhere… PERFECT FOR PORTAITS!!! The light is also softer and friendlier in early morning (but, it’s hard to get up and everything is wet) and evening just before dusk (this is what I prefer to work with people and their horses).

While I was there I saw Sarah Wheeler who I had done senior portraits for several weeks back. She’s such a nice young lady and when she saw me she told me how delighted she was with all her potraits. “Cutting back on what I want from the shoot is soooooo difficult”, she explained, “but mom says I have too… I’d buy them all if I could.” Wow, that was a real ego boost, but really I am always so happy when people love their portraits. It’s exactly what I want from every client.

Anyway, we borrowed Sarah’s lead and I asked if she might help us with “ears up” for Lori’s portraits. She called her mom and explained that she would be late for dinner (if that was okay)  she wanted to help me out and proceeded to get creative with her friend using treats, plastic bags and whatnot to get the horses ears perked up. She did a great job, just as her little sister had several weeks earlier. I understand that as a mare, Breezy is well know for laying her ears back in disagreement.

I wanted to make sure that Lori had a chance to see her proofs before blogging samples from the shoot. We tried lots of ideas and many worked just great.

Trails End Barn Door Mini Sessions

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

This morning I went over to Trails End for the Hunter/Jumper show (DLSC). I decided to offer some free mini-sessions in the barn door of their newest barn. I was able to shut the doors at the other end of the barn and turn off the lights so that with my subject standing in the doorway the background would go very dark. My lovely subjects stand out from the dark background in a very dramatic way.

Unfortunately, after having only three sessions, the clouds opened up and with a few cracks of lightning there came heavy downpours of rain. If you were at the show hoping for a mini session, perhaps next time. But, just so you understand, I don’t offer free sessions any time. I wanted to create some portraits this weekend and this became a good opportunity. However, if you have a couple of friends and want to break up a regular custom farm call session into several shorter mini sessions, that is a great way to reduce the initial farm call session fee.

As I was at the show, I saw one of my senior portrait session subjects. Corrie was incognito and it took several looks before I realize who she was. She had changed the color of her hair since we created her portraits. Shortly after her mom came up and expressed how happy she was with the canvas print that I had recently sent to them. I definitely have to have more samples of the canvas portraits. They are works of art.

When it was clear that the rain, rain, go away, come again another day was not going to work, I headed home to process these images. If you would like to see the others, go to my proofing area here. Go to Horseshows “Trails End Barn Doors 7/11/09″ While you are there don’t forget to check out other shows that you might have images for. Whenever I add another show, I drop off the oldest show so don’t wait too long to make your orders.

An adorable little helper

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

At Sarah Wheelers senior portrait session her little sister helped out by standing behind me, rattling things, swishing leaves, and just jumping about to get the attention of the horse. In equine photography we call this “ear up”. If you take a portrait with a horse and the ears are not up many times the horse appears rather like a mule. Or the horse seems annoyed or bored and this is not what we want when capturing that special connection between a horse and his human.

So Sarah’s little sis helped out and I just thought she was so cute I had to take some portraits of her too. Also the galleries for this portrait session are up: Sarah’s Senior Portrait Session Gallery

Sarah Wheeler’s Senior Portrait Session with Her Horse

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

It was fun to shoot Sarah and her horse at Dancing Horse Farm. One thing that I thought was fun, was seeing her facebook status that said, “wake, eat, work, ride, wake, eat, work, ride, REPEAT!” Sarah really loves her horse and even though he gave her some trouble trying to constantly eat the grass as we were shooting, she never really got angry with the big guy. I have been sorting and adjusting images this evening and thought I would share some here now. There are many more to see and later when the proofing site is up, I will post a link here.

Dressage Show at Greenstone Stables

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

What a great day for a show. The weather was warm, but the humidity was lower than on Friday and there was a nice breeze. Not only that, but Greenstone’s dressage arena is surrounded by treas making it very comfortable for all the observers. If there is something that other stables would take from this it is plant some shade trees. It was just great.

I didn’t get there right at the very start so I may have missed a rider or two, but most riders were doing more than one test. Hopefully everyone is represented in the pictures on my proofing site Peter DeMott~Photography to Remember. Click on PROOFS, then Shows, then Greenstone Dressage 6/20/09. That should get you there.

Here are some portraits and action shots to wet your whistle:

Greater Dayton Horse Trials at Twin Towers

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

That was great fun. I spent a good part of Saturday May 17th at the Greater Dayton Horse Trials at Twin Towers Equestrian Park near Dayton shooting stadium jumping and lots of candids. Saw my good friend Shanon Loomis competing with her morgan.

I know Shanon mostly because of her participation in Endurance Riding. I have an Endurance News cover with her kids crossing a river and there was an article about her daughter as a junior rider last year in the same publication.

Also got to meet Suzanne Fisher of Suzanne Fischer Photography. She and her crew were the official photographers for the event. I checked out her proofing trailer which was pretty cool and we chatted some between riders. It took me a while to make the connection, but her company used to be called Blind Eye Photography and that is how I know her. I always have such a time when people change categories on me.

If you are looking to purchase photos from the show you should go to her web site: Suzanne Fischer Photography

Nice little proofing trailer, but packed out with three viewing stations and room for an uploading station as well. I was impressed once I went inside.

If the wind had been there which I experienced at Twin Towers Equestrian Park the week before at the Stillwater Pony Club Hunter Jumper Show, the tents would have been blown down this weekend, but the wind was not so bad this weekend. It was very overcast and it did rain, but not enough to bother any of the fun and excitment that people were having here. Here are some highlight photos:

Stillwater Pony Club May 9th Hunter/Jumper show

Friday, May 15th, 2009

It was a very overcast and extremely windy day at the Twin Towers Equestrian Park out past Fairborn, Ohio. Everyone said that it is always windy there, but this day the jumps kept blowing over and Ann had to have someone go to Walmart to get sandbags. I was amazed that the registration tent and the refreshments tent didn’t up and blow away completely. Most of the horses were getting their nice shiny summer coats.

Although there were clouds the sun poked through frequently and I ended up with a pretty bad sunburn on my face. I had sunscreen in the truck, but didn’t use any.

Everyone had a great time.

I have plenty of candids and portraits from the warm up area along with the actual competition. The little kids were adorable. Pictures will be available for purchase for a month or two, prices go up to my regular rates in a week from tomorrow so if you want to save 20% you better get your orders in. With as nice as many of the pictures are, I a perplexed as to why more purchases have not been made yet. I can only guess that people are not seeing the pictures, SO PLEASE send this link to the folks you know in that group and that show. Of course I can only give up days like that for shows that want me there.

It was great getting to know some of you a little better. One family asked if I do senior portraits, you know with horses? Yes, I do. And when the grass is green and the trees have leaves is a great time to be scheduling those. But, it does not have to be just for seniors. I was just called for a co-ed graduating from college that wants a graduation portrait session with her horse and I love shooting kids on horses, but I am not limited to horse or horse with people portrait art. If you look through my blog, you will see families and children sessions as well.

So, I hope you’ll vote to have me back by making sure that everyone sees the photos and placing your orders soon. My 20% discount is my way to make sure you look soon before the distraction of other activities. Hope you all enjoy them.

P.S. I did rush to get the images up onto the site. I noticed that toward the end there are a couple small sections of photos that are too bright. I have been too busy to work on those this week, so if any of those are a pictures of you, please email me with the image numbers under the photos you have an interest in and I will adjust them correctly before you place your order. Alas, there are only so many hours in the day.

Also, if you are on FACE BOOK, I’d love to have you as a friend and you will be able to tag your photos for your friends to see (I always put up a couple photos from each portrait session and show). Here is my profile page: Peter DeMott

Dancing Horse Farm Fun Show

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Dancing Horse Farm is located in Lebanon, Ohio. Today they had a little fun show. Yesterday they had a dressage show with their highest turn out to date (52 participants). The weather forecast was for intermittent rain, but as it turned out, it was a bright sunny warm spring day. I’m sorry I missed it, but I could not make it because of a scheduling conflict.

Today was overcast, but a lovely day, however the fun show was in the indoor arena. Here are some photos from the day:

Before everyone arrived, I was introduced to the new baby on the farm. They purchased a mare and she kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Then as the realized she was pregnant, and they started wondering what they might have. They called the previous owner, but didn’t get any information. The pony popped this large baby out without a hitch. She already has to bend down to nurse. But, what a friendly little thing she is.

2009 Rolex Kentucky 3 day Event

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Although the weather was great, sunny and breezy all day long, it was not ideal for photography. At each jump in order to get really good images you had to determine if there was an angle you could shoot at that would put the sun behind you. Otherwise the shady side of the horse was pretty dark. After starting at the main water jumps, I worked my way completely around the course taking some photos at each jump if I could find a good angle.

I would say hello to other photographers, both amateur and professional. I might mention the Equine Photographer’s Network or just ask them how things were going. I handed out my card and asked them to email me and I would send them a link when they said they wanted to know more about EPnet. Some already knew about EPnet, but the ones that did not were interested in knowing more. We’ll see if they were interested enough to email me for the link. Mary Ann Allen is an EPnet member from Indiana who I met while seeking some shade. She was seeking the shade to do some chimping and we had a chance to chat there in the shade during the lunch break before moving on.

It was evident that some jumps were modified to prevent problems with the jumps (the major wreck last year lead to special meetings about the safety in the sport). There were several falls, but it seemed to me that in every case the horse and rider were okay.  There was one incident when a horse had jumped jump 10, and something went wrong. My understanding was that he landed okay, but staggered a bit and collapsed and died, but really I only spoke briefly to another photographer about it. Go to the news blogs and the official site have the details written up by now.  Click here for the news of Kingpin’s death.

Here are some photos from the event. At the bottom is a link to my gallery of images from the event.

Above: This was the main water jumps about halfway through the course. There were huge crowds here throughout the day and it was difficult to find good angles. At one point I thought I had a good place. There were some people sitting in lawn chairs right at the rope, but then as soon as a horse arrived, they stood up completely obstructing my view.

Below: Throughout the course you could stand very close to the corridor and the jumps which were marked off for spectators with white rope. There were crossing guards to make sure people could get from one side to the other without disrupting the competitors. But, as you can see here there were many places where you could shoot unobstructed as these horses FLEW by at full gallops with dirt flying.

Above: This is jump 10 where Kingpin collapsed. This is another rider later in the day. It is placed fairly early in the course as there were 29 or 30 jumps total.

Below: Also among my favorite subjects, people enjoying those they love. I also took a couple of puppy photos, and interesting white German Shepherd, and a group of three ladies that wanted their photos taken. I gave to each (except this photo) my business card so that they could come to my site and look at the resulting images. Who knows if they will or not.
